Yup, you heard what I said! I talked to Tony Rock a few days ago … I mean All Def Comedy is BACK! LOL Wait, which part of this title made you click this link again? Hell, it doesn’t even really matter, they’re both true! BOOM!
I had the pleasure of “interviewing” or should I say, talking to, Tony Rock, a few days ago about his new hosting gig aka All Def Comedy and what’s up to come, so I thought I should let y’all know what’s coming this weekend! (Well tomorrow to be exact. LOL)
However, if you don’t know what All Def Comedy is, ‘cause you ain’t got cable like me, and ain’t hip on the shit that’s been going on for the last couple of years ‘cause you been living in a box (aka working too damn much, lol) here’s a quick run down.
In the 90’s (whoop whoop) Russel Simmons launched a ton of (today’s) comedy superstars careers, such as Bernie Mack (RIP), Dave Chappelle (lawd, lol), Chris Tucker, Martin Lawrence, and Cedric the Entertainer, with his HBO series Russel Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam.
Does this ish ring a bell now? LOL (I swear I just realized what the hell I was actually talking about my damn self. I’m sitting here like ohhhhhhh shitttttt, I remember this now! LOL Why the hell does the 90’s feel so damn distant? UGH! It’s like I can barely remember anything from that time oh so long ago.)
But whatever, you get what I’m talking about now right? (Hopefully.) Either way, Russell Simmons is bringing Def Comedy Jam BACK! (But you know, revamped and renamed as All Def Comedy.) And Tony Rock (Chris Rock’s brother, in case y’all still confused on who he is too, I pray you not though, lol) is gonna be hosting the show!
Yes it’s still uncensored, and features stand-up comedy performances by up and coming, African-American, comics, just like before. (With performances by Chris Powell, Zainab Johnson, Kevin Tate, and Robert Powell, as well as HBO’s Def Comedy Jam veteran Tony Roberts.) However, I’m assuming the content is gonna be a lot more relevant and thought-provoking than it was in the 90’s, especially with everything that’s been going on lately. (You can’t tell me a black comic isn’t gonna make at least one joke about what’s been going lately. LOL)
Here’s a preview of what the show is gonna be like:
Anywho, here’s what you really came for! My talk with Tony.
(Keep in mind that this was a phone call, and I wasn’t able to record the entire thing, so this may be bits and pieces of what he said or what he meant to say. Kay? Good! It’s like when someone tells you a story and they can’t remember the entire thing so they fill it in, so you get the point. LOL Also keep in mind that, I had to actually call his hotel room, due to technical difficulties, soooo this may be shorter than what you expected and I swear it’s because he was a bit annoyed (or caught off guard) because I called him instead of what was originally planned (them calling me).
You know I gotta tell you all the ish that happens. LOL But either way, we got through it, so here ya go.
Sanaa Brooks (me, duh, lol): So let’s jump right in! Tell us about your new HBO series, All Def Comedy.
Tony Rock: Well you know, it’s a relaunch of Def Jam! It’s all DEF. Same formula that worked years ago, I’m just the new face of it.
Sanaa: I hear it airs on November 12th, will there be any sneak peaks before then?
Tony Rock: Not for you. I mean, I’ll get to see it because you know I wanna see what I look like on camera before it airs, but there won’t be any sneak peaks for anyone else.
Sanaa: So what’s it like working with Russell? Is there a moment where you two aren’t laughing?
Tony Rock: He’s very intelligent, and yeah, there are several moments where we’re not laughing … But he soaks up knowledge and he’s not afraid to say his opinion. It’s a great feeling, working with him, being that I’m a fan, and now he’s a friend.
Sanaa: Now I know you were hosting another show in Hollywood called All Def Digital Comedy, can you tell us how All Def Comedy will be different from that?
“I mean, there’s really no space for blacks in LA to perform, so Russell created a night just for them!” – Tony Rock
Tony Rock: Yeah, I started doing that every Wednesday, and it was a way to show off black comics. It’s dope! I mean, there’s really no space for blacks in LA to perform, so Russell created a night just for them! And then HBO joined in and gave him a 1 hr special.
Sanaa: Oh cool! So are there any special guests that we can look forward to seeing?
Tony Rock: This isn’t an alumni show, it’s all new fresh faces, so not really.
Sanaa: Okay, so let’s talk about YOUR tour, with dates set for NY in Nov and next year, can you tell us a little about your tour, and what the material is going to be like?
Tony Rock: Well actually I’m touring all year, it’s two tours a year, from Jan to March with Mike Epps, and then the second half it’s just me in comedy clubs. I usually bring dudes as opening acts, that aren’t household names yet. The tour is called The Rock The Mic Tour. As far as material, it’s always changing, but there’s definitely a lot of relation stuff, and then of course there’s a little political, race, pop culture, you know, that sort of thing.
Sanaa: Any big plans for 2017? Are you writing a book maybe?
Tony Rock: Definitely hoping this All Def thing pops off … there’s a HBO movie I’ll be in, but I really wanna show them I can you know, host a show. I’ll also be hosting a new game show starting Jan 24 called The Game of Dating. But no book yet, I’m waiting for a special ending to write a book.
Sanaa: Okay great! Well thank you so much for your time. Have a wonderful day.
Tony: You too.
Andddd, there ya have it! Are you tuning in to All Def Comedy tomorrow?
