A few years ago, I did my nails all by my damn self, and I hated it! So I started going to the cheap Asian nail salons near my home. Eventually, I began to hate those too! Yeah my nails looked better than before, but it wasn’t worth it!
First came the wait …
No matter what time I went to these nail salons, bright and early when they first opened, late at night when they were about to close, during the week when everyone else was supposed to be at work, they ALWAYS seemed to be busy! Which was weird, because it’s not like their services were that great.
Henceforth my next issue …
The service was trash!
They would pluck at my cuticles too hard, or accidentally cut me while trying to clip my nails, and then after all that, they would rush through my manicure. It’s not like they were just trying to get through everyone so folks wouldn’t have to wait too long, but they were basically just rushing through everyone’s so they could do as many people as possible throughout the day.
Half the time, they weren’t even paying attention to what they were supposed to be doing, ahem, my nails! They were too busy talking to each other in their foreign language (rude) or watching TV!
So while they were cheap, and close to my home, they weren’t worth it! Eventually I started looking for a new salon to call home. That’s when I found out about Barry’s Beauty Bar, a black owned nail salon, ran by two men, who had a wonderful staff. It was freaking great!
Their service was WAY better, the nail techs knew what they were doing and actually talked to you in English, and even though there were TV’s on, they weren’t watching them 24/7.
Eventually, they became very popular, and I could no longer stand the two-hour wait time, so I went searching for a new nail salon. Then boom, I found out about the Very Polished Nail Lounge, which is also a black owned, black staff establishment, with great customer service. (Hell, they actually give you a complementary cocktail or drink while you do your nails.)
But do you see my new pattern now?
I gave up those cheap, nasty, Asian nail salons, for the (way more expensive), but has great customer service, black owned nail salons, and I’ve never looked back. Even when my nails are long over due, I refuse to go to an Asian nail salon! I don’t think I’ll ever go back, unless it’s to do my eyebrows. LOL
I still don’t even understand the black folks that still go to Asian nail salons, like do you guys know there are black owned nail salons now? Yeah they’re a bit more expensive, but the customer service alone is totally worth it. Not to mention their nail designs are usually dope af!
Don’t believe me? Have you NOT been reading this post? LOL All these nails (yes those are my hands, ew, lol) were done in a black owned nail salon. So yeah, that’s why I stopped going to Asian nail salons! What about you?
Where do you go to do your nails?
Is it a black owned nail salon, or are you still looking for the cheapest spot possible? (Don’t worry, I’m not judging, I’m currently sitting here with 30-day old nails that are wayyy grown out because I’m broke, so I can understand the money struggle. LOL)
But if you haven’t been to a black owned nail salon yet, I’m gonna need you to find yoself one asap! (If you’re in NYC, try one of the two I mentioned above, or The Nail Belle. All different atmosphere’s but each does nails just as great as the other.)
