I know you’re probably staring at your screen right about now wondering, “well what the hell is it, if it isn’t a train show”, but relax! Let me explain. LOL A few weeks ago, I attended the Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden with my daughter and sister, thanks to the NYBG who provided us with complementary tickets in exchange for this review, and it was fun. But honestly … to me, it wasn’t really a train show!
Now before you say “huh”, again, here’s why!
From what I could see, the holiday train show wasn’t primarily about trains. It didn’t show off uh-mazing trains and how cool trains are. It doesn’t tell us how trains are made. Hell, it didn’t tell us a darn thing about trains! Sure there are all kinds of trains on display, like this one below …
But to me, these trains aren’t the real focus of the “train show”.
To me, the real focus of NYBG’s Holiday Train Show is everything else on display.
Everything you see on the tables, but the actual trains. Because to me, these trains are just … well, trains! Yeah they’re cute, but they’re nothing worth trekking through 3 inches of snow for. (Which we did by the way. LOL See photo below.)
I don’t even know if this was 3 inches of snow! I just know that we almost got caught in this “snow storm” because my daughter and sister refused to let me stay home, talking bout the show is inside not outside. Ugh! LOL So was seeing cute model trains worth (almost) freezing our butts off, and (almost) getting stuck in the snow? Hell no!
But the tracks the trains run on, the landmarks that were depicted in this show, the bridges the trains run over and under, THOSE are what makes this train show uh-mazing and memorable. Why? Well, when was the last time you made a model building out of twigs and leaves? Exactly! LOL
Each and every landmark that’s presented in this show is made from nature!
And do you know how cool it is to see buildings made from twigs, bark, acorns and leaves? Do you know how uh-mazing it is to look up close and see how they built each building, piece by piece, and how detailed everything is? My daughter sure does! She freaking loved it.
But you see, this is why the NYBG’s Holiday Train Show isn’t really a train show! This thang isn’t all about the trains! (Lawd help you if you just started singing all about the benjamins. LOL) The trains are just to highlight how amazing nature really is. And when you really think about it, I guess that’s why the New York Botanical GARDEN has a train show. LOL Of course it’s gonna show off leaves, and twigs, and branches.
However, these leaves, twigs, and branches are all put together to depict famous NYC landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and Rockefeller Center, etc. That’s what’s really cool about this show. So if you didn’t check out the show this year, make sure you add it to your to-do list for next year. (And if you don’t have kids, even freaking better! You can attend one of their bar car nights! You’ll be able to enjoy the show while you enjoy an adult beverage!) So what do you think?
Do you agree that the Holiday Train Show isn’t really a train show at all?
