So last weekend, I was invited to attend FFFWeek’s final model casting, here in NYC, so I could interview the founder, Ms. Gwen Devoe, and that’s exactly what I did! I also ended up volunteering to help out after my interview, and I also got to interview Ms. Denise Caldwell, who’s represents one of their sponsors, Fit For Me (Friut of the Loom). She’s also a celebrity stylist. You can read more about my entire experience here.
Sanaa Brooks: What is it like being an ambassador for Fruit of the Loom?
Denise Caldwell: Well I am the style influencer for Fit For Me and Fit For Me was actually relaunched last year. It’s actually targeted just for us curvy plus sized women, so how cool is that? For us to have something thats our own for under panties, because you know sometimes it’s an intimate space but it’s something that you wanna feel confident in when you’re wearing your favorite outfit, so I really like it because it’s about empowering women.
They have fashionable options and they have great sizes, so when you’re talking about sizes, it’s dress sizes from a size 14 to a size 32, but they do numbers 9 to 13 and they have great cuts. My favorite is the boxer briefs which is similar to a boy shorts but they just got a new breathable one and now that summer’s coming you really wanna make sure that, you know, your under pinnings and the love below has some breathing room and I really like that because of the technology that they use, [plus] it’s still cotton which is great.
But I’ve always been a fan of Fruit of the Loom growing up as a child, so it was just kind of a [really good] partnership to happen and I love that we’re back for the second year of sponsorship for Full Figured Fashion Week as well. So we have some great fashionable things under our sleeves [and] I’m really excited to be here today at the New York casting. You know New York is always the biggest, the baddest and the brightest, curvy girls coming out to represent so it’s just exciting and I’m loving seeing all the fashion too, the girls look amazing.
Sanaa: You’ve worked with so many famous celebs, what are your top three styling tips for us regular folks?
Denise: Absolutely! Well for me I’ve worked in fashion for a little bit over ten years. I’ve worked in magazines such as Harper Bazaar’s, Oprah Magazine and Seventeen, and some of the celebrity styling teams I’ve worked on were Sarah Jessica Parker, Mrs Obama, Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lopez. But there are so many great trends that I saw run down the runway for fashion week in NY.
You know I’d like to say, for my curvy and plus size girls, don’t be intimidated by patterns and prints. You know denim is still gonna be a big trend so your denim on denim, or as they call it the Canadian tuxedo, which is really fantastic, and you can play with the chambray accessories, [because] they have really cute shoes right now that are like denim chambray fabric so don’t forget about your accessories. Bright colors! So that bubble gum pink, that paprika kinda pumpkin spice … it’s not just for your lattes at Starbucks, you can wear it now!
And then you know great colored blues are good and the off the shoulder trend. I know a lot of curvy girls are saying well girl i gotta wear a bra. There’s definitely ways to wear under pinnings and look amazing [while] still wearing the off the shoulder trend and that kinda ties in with Fit For Me as well. I always say you know you can have the most fabulous outfit on, but if what’s underneath isn’t right, you know your outfit is gonna look a hot mess.
So thats just really something I pride myself on. So three great trends: denim on denim, [which] is definitely in affect right now, you know, patterns and prints. If you wanna do the window pane or florals, which are great and then also color. You know, color is an instant mood booster and it also makes you look youthful, vibrant and sexy. and who doesn’t wanna do that regardless of your size?
And that’s it you guys! I had a lot of fun interviewing Ms. Caldwell and now that I know I’ll be attending FFFWeek this year, I can’t freaking wait! It’s going to be uh-mazing! I can already tell. Whoop whoop! So glad I went and did this interview, even though I was nervous as hell the night before.
