A few days ago, I was granted the opportunity to see my very first Cirque du Soleil show thanks to the Cirque team. I had a blast! (Thanks for the complementary tickets Marc!) And since it was the day right before my daughters first day of school, I went with a “friend” *cough cough*.
Now if you’re here to find out what the show is about, I’m just let you down now, because I haven’t the darnest clue! LOL (Only the narrator spoke English, and even though my date seemed to “understand” what they were saying, aka he guessed because of their tone and body language, lol, I STILL don’t know what it was about! LOL)
(Note: All photos and videos below are credited to Cirque du Soleil and Errisson Lawrence. This was the first show I got to sit back and just watch, without having to worry about photos or videos, so thanks you guys!)
But does that freaking matter? NOPE! Anyone can easily google TORUK and see what it’s about! (So click that highlighted link if you’re one of those people who just NEED to know what this show is about. LOL) Cause I’m not here to tell you what the story line is. I’m here to tell you how AMAZING the show was! It’s like watching an Opera, or listening to a song in a different language. Although you have no freaking clue what the hell they’re saying, it’s still beautiful! And that’s how I felt watching TORUK, which was inspired by the movie Avatar.
If you haven’t already seen the commercials on TV, check out the TORUK trailer below:
Although I was completely lost on what was going on, I wasn’t lost because the different language made it hard to follow. I was lost because well … I was distracted! LOL (The lady next to us mentioned this show would suck for someone who has ADD because of everything they had going on all at once, and well, yeah, that’s why I was lost. LOL) I’m one of those people who just has to know what’s going on at all times, so my eyes darted everywhere. From the stage to the aisles and back, because quite frankly, there was ALWAYS something going on!
However, the REAL reason I can’t tell you what the show was about is because I was too damn distracted by the production! LOL I’m a geek! (Or is the correct word nerd, I don’t remember. Google it and let me know in the comments why don’t cha. LOL) Either way, I was so damn focused on how amazing everything looked, that I couldn’t pay attention to what was really going on.
I didn’t HEAR the story, all I heard was sound effects (which were great by the way, shout out to their sound designer Jacques Boucher). And I didn’t SEE actors telling a story, I saw great costumes, a great set, and uh-mazing lightening! (Shout out to Kym Barrett, their Costume and Makeup Designer; Carl Fillion, the Set and Props Designer; and Alain Lortie, their Lighting Designer!)
So while the story line was clearly good enough to make my date jump out of his seat a little (he’s still tryna deny this, lol) and it was clearly good enough to have him literally at the edge of his seat, (I had to tell homeboy to lay back after a while, lol), the production of this show was also amazing enough to have someone like me forget their was even a story being told. LOL (I literally had to ask him what was going on at one point. Sigh!)
The only thing I do have to say is, use REAL FIRE damn it! LOL (I don’t know if it was just me, but I totally think using a real fire would have been dope! Although, if they had, the little brother would have definitely been on fire! LOL He kept .. never mind, I’m not gonna spoil it for those that wanna go see it.)
Oh and I don’t know if every Cirque du Soleil show has their own app, but TORUK did! It was kinda cool until I couldn’t stop staring at my phone to see what was coming next! LOL (I think the app would be cool as hell for kids, because it makes them feel like they’re apart of the show. Don’t really know if it enhanced MY experience or just made it a bit more difficult to focus.) Either way, it was kind of cool, especially when most of the audience used their apps at the same time!
But anywho, if you’re a production feen like myself, this is definitely a show you wanna see! Just watching the light effects and set made this show worth it for me. (If you’re not a production feen, but you enjoyed Avatar, and you like watching people do cool acrobat tricks, then once again, go see this! LOL)
The next show is in Newark, NJ! It starts on September 15 and ends on the 18th! (Sorry NYC folks, the Brooklyn show ended on the 11th, but Newark ain’t that far either, so hush. I can hear them complaints from all the way over here. LOL) If you’d like to purchase tickets for the NJ show, you can visit: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/usa/newark/toruk/buy-tickets/. (Not in NY or NJ? Click here for the full tour list.)
If you’re not a show production geek like me (which I don’t know how you even made it this far, lol) you can just jump straight down to the comments and tell me if you’re going to go see the show or not! (But if you’ve already seen the show, let’s talk about it! Better yet, tell me what the damn story line is please! LOL) If you ARE a show production geek like moi, these next photos are for YOU! (Found them on the site so I figured I’d include them in this post because I find them quite fascinating. LOL)
